I enjoy dining out – me encanta cenar afuera – and here where I live in Barcelona there are several great restaurants close by. I avoid the costly places where the tourists go, I like to eat in the eateries where the natives eat and they have a good guide for finding a decent restaurant:
Un restaurante debería ser: bueno, bonito y barato – good, nice and cheap.
So, as you’ve found a good restaurant, let’s now have a few easy Spanish phrases that’ll make a winning impression and get you excellent service.
You know when you’re in two minds about what to order and you say:
“I can’t make my mind up between the monkfish and the duck.” It’s so easy to say this in Spanish, por ejemplo:
Estoy dudando entre la lasaña y la hamburguesa – I’m deciding between the lasagne and the hamburger.
Another tasty Spanish phrase I use a lot when dining concerns expressing that you fancy something, like this:
Me apetece una pizza – I quite fancy a pizza
Here comes the next brilliant Spanish expression to introduce a realistic flair to your ever-increasing vocabulary. You’ve smelt the appetizing aromas coming from the kitchen and you say:
“Wow that smells absolutely gorgeous!” To say this in Spanish – and this may surprise you – use this typically emotive phrase:
¡Huele de muerte! – It smells of death!
Don’t ask me why this is used but it most certainly is and it’s among those realistic, everyday Spanish words and phrases that most non-native speakers hardly use and you’ll make a knockout impression with it!
